Mixing your own shades from powder paints

One of the greatest advantages of pigments is the ability to create your own colour combinations.

You are not limited to the shades you happen to have. By mixing two or more pigments you can create a practically endless range of new colour variations.

Start small

When mixing, it is best to start with a small amount of pigment. Add the individual colours gradually and keep watching the result.

A strongly tinting pigment can affect the mixture far more than a weaker one. There is no need to use the same amount of each colour.

Work with the ratio

A small change in the ratio can shift the resulting shade considerably. Try, for example, making several mixtures of the same pair of pigments, each time changing their proportion.

The result will be a whole range of shades, from soft to intense.

Build your own palette

You can record your own colour mixtures and gradually build a personal palette.

Note the pigment used, its amount and the resulting ratio. Next time you can repeat your favourite shade.
